Charly Evon Simpson is a playwright and performer from New York City. Her plays include Jump, Scratching the Surface, Behind the Sheet, form of a girl unknown, Hottentotted, While We Wait, and more. Jump will be having a rolling world premiere in 2019, debuting at PlayMakers Repertory Company in NC, Milagro in OR, and Actor's Express in GA. Her work has been seen, heard, and/or developed at NNPN's MFA Playwrights Workshop at The Kennedy Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Ars Nova, The Flea, The Tank, Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival, FringeNYC, and others. She is a member of the 17/18 Clubbed Thumb Early Career Writers Group and the 18/19 'Wright Club with The Amoralists. She is The Pack's current playwright-in-residence, one of the three playwrights chosen for Forward Flux's Three New American Plays commission, and has worked on commissions from the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project, Clubbed Thumb, The Flea, and The Movement/NYC. Charly was a Philadelphia Dramatists Center Playwright-in-Residence at Plays & Players Theatre and is a former member of SPACE on Ryder Farm's The Working Farm, Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Youngblood, Pipeline Theatre Company’s PlayLab, and Fresh Ground Pepper’s PlayGround PlayGroup.
Charly loves to teach playwriting and storytelling to people of all ages. She is currently an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College and an engager at The Engaging Educator. In the past, she has worked in middle schools as a full-time tutor, a social worker, and playwriting teacher. In addition, she was a yoga teacher and health coach.
Charly received her A.B. with honors in Theatre Arts and Literary Arts from Brown University. She holds a master’s in Women’s Studies from University of Oxford, New College and a MFA in Playwriting from Hunter College, where she studied with Annie Baker, Brighde Mullins, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
