Charly Evon Simpson’s plays include Jump, Behind the Sheet, Scratching the Surface, form of a girl unknown, it’s not a trip it’s a journey, and more. Her work has been seen and/or developed with Ensemble Studio Theatre, Ars Nova, Chautauqua Theater Company, Salt Lake Acting Company, The Flea, The Lark, Page 73, National New Play Network through its NNPN/Kennedy Center MFA Playwrights Workshop and National Showcase of New Plays, and others. Charly was recently nominated for the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for Behind the Sheet. Jump is receiving an National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, with productions at Playmaker’s Rep (Chapel Hill, NC), Actor’s Express (Atlanta), Shrewd Productions (Austin, TX), and Milagro Theatre (Portland, OR) in 2019. It is the first recipient of the David Goldman Fund for New Plays. Her play it’s not a trip it’s a journey will be a part of the O’Neill’s National Playwrights Conference this summer and this fall, form of a girl unknown will premiere at Salt Lake Acting Company. She’s currently a member of WP Theater’s 2018-2020 Lab, The New Georges Jam, Primary Stages’ Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, The Amoralists 18/19 ‘Wright Club and she’s The Pack’s current playwright-in-residence. Charly is a former member of SPACE on Ryder Farm’s The Working Farm, Clubbed Thumb’s 17/18 Early Career Writers’ Group, Ensemble Studio Theatre's Youngblood, and Pipeline Theatre Company’s PlayLab.
Charly loves to teach playwriting and storytelling to people of all ages. She is currently an adjunct lecturer at SUNY Purchase. In the past, she has worked in middle schools as a full-time tutor, a social worker, and playwriting teacher. In addition, she was a yoga teacher and health coach.
She received her BA from Brown University, a master’s in Women’s Studies from University of Oxford, New College, and her MFA in Playwriting from Hunter College, where she studied with Annie Baker, Brighde Mullins, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
